The Garnacha grape is a very Spanish variety that has been present in our country since the time of the Kingdom of Aragon, when it reached its greatest splendor.
The name of the Garnacha grape comes from the Italian word "vernaccia", whose origin comes “Vernazza”, a town within the Liguria region, famous for its wines.
Among other names that the Garnacha grape has received, it is worth highlighting: Aragonesa, Cannonau, Garnache, Uva di Spagna, Toledo, Tintilla and Garnaccho Negro.
It is one of the Spanish grapes with the largest vineyard area in the world. It occupies the third place of the grapes with the biggest area planted in Spain, after Tempranillo and Airén.
The Garnacha grape rises from its own ashes - A fashionable variety in Spain
During the 1980s and 1990s, the production and consumption of the Garnacha grape fell considerably, in part, due to the popularity and success of the Tempranillo variety. The Garnacha grape was considered of low quality and not very productive, being discredited and mistreated in the wine sector.
The Garnacha grape acquired the bad reputation of producing wines with a tendency to oxidation and that it was a grape only valid to accompany and add nuances to other grapes with better barrel aging.
It was a time when other foreign varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot were cropped, occupying large tracts of vineyard plots in Spanish territory.
However, since the beginning of the new millennium, the Garnacha has been regaining prestige, re-emerging from its own ashes like the phoenix. At present, it is one of the most fashionable varieties in Spain.
Today's consumers are tireless seekers of authenticity, of the expression of the land, and they demand native grapes capable of transmitting the true essence of the terroir.
The Garnacha grape variety brings fruity notes and freshness to the wines made with it, wines loaded with personality, capable of describing the history of the place of origin. Therefore, wines made with Garnacha grapes are a trend in Spain and are recognized worldwide.
