El Camino 2021
The label of the bottle, with a handmade design, has a branch of vine shoot from the plot itself. A unique wine both for its content as well as for its external context. The Torre de Oña project aims to recover small vineyards of limited production, in which typical varieties of the area such as Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura coexist, cultivated with traditional and environmentally friendly techniques.
El Camino was born in a small plot with vines over 80 years old, located in a small municipality of Álava, Elvillar. The grapes selected were (97%) Tempranillo and (3%) other varieties such as Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura. The grapes were carefully harvested by hand in 20 kg boxes with optical selection of berries, and aged in 500-litre French oak barrels.
Undoubtedly, the beginning of an exciting path yet to be discovered and developed.
Harvest
The 2021 vintage had very controlled bud break and moderate fruit set, which resulted in the development of very small, loose clusters. The wines were characterised by a very balanced alcohol content, good levels of acidity and tannins, making this vintage one of those with the greatest potential for long ageing.
Vine harvest
The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted into 20 kg crates. After destemming, they are vatted at a temperature below 10ºC for 12 days, obtaining a must that is even more intense in aromas and colour. After alcoholic fermentation in tanks, it completes malolactic fermentation in 500-litre French oak barrels for 14 months. The wine remains in tank for 5 months until the final blend is blended.
Tasting note
Intense ruby red colour with garnet rims, clean, very bright.
The nose stands out for its intensity with fine notes of redcurrant, blueberry and blackberry that envelop elegant and delicate aromas of clove, liquorice, tobacco and caramel from its careful ageing in French oak barrels.
In the mouth it is very pleasant, with a fine palate, balanced and with sweet and silky tannins. The aftertaste is of great intensity, with noble aromas of red fruits of undergrowth and spices, also acquired during its ageing.
